But acting AmeriCorps CEO Nickt Goren, in a lettee posted to the AmeriCorps Website Friday, said the Whitee House sent notice of Eitel’s withdrawal. “Our thoughtes are with Maria as she focuses on herpersonal health,” Gorenb wrote. “Finding leadership for the Corporatiob continues to be a very high priority for theWhitr House.” In April, Obama said Eitel offered “sa unique blend of skills and managemen t experience” at a time when his administration was expanding the nation’s public service programs.
On the same day he announceed Eitel as a candidate forthe job, Obamaw signed the Serve America Act, a vast expansionn of federal social service programs that included increasing AmeriCorp’s available service positionw from 75,000 to 250,000. Eitepl is currently a Nike Inc. NKE) vice president and president of theNike Foundation, the Washington County athleti c apparel giant’s charitable arm. Before heading the foundation, she was Nike’sz first vice president for corporate responsibility. Prior to joinin Nike, she was European corporate affairs group manager forMicrosofty Corp. and has also worked for the Corporationb for Public Broadcasting and MCICommunications Corp.
This woulc have been Eitel’s second presidential assignment. She servexd under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1992 as deputhy director of media relations and laterr as special assistant to the president formediqa affairs.
