The hotel concept, while still may be a highlight of a slightly tweaked development plan forthe $315 million Canal Side project, pegged for the lower Main Streett area, just south of the New York State Canal Side was unveile d in December by , the localo arm of , which is chargeds with overseeing projects along Buffalo’s Canal Side’s final development plans will be shown to the publicx in July as part of a series of mandates public hearings connected to environmental reviewws of the project. The environmental reviews are due to be completecdthis fall.
Moving the hotel, rumoref to be one from the Marriotcorporate family, is perhaps the biggest adjustment in the Canal Side developmen t plan. Originally, proposed renovatinyg the eight-story Donovan Building into a multi-used complex anchored by a hotel. Sources now indicate the Donovajn Building may be primarily used for Clasxs A office space and apartmentor condos. A hotel is considered a crucial element inCanakl Side’s overall development plan. The Webstedr block is currently used as a surfacw parking lot for downtown workers during the day and for patrone attending events at HSBC Arena on nightesand weekends.
The block is located between HSBC Atriukm and thearena and, at one time, was considerer the site of a proposed 14-story Adelphia Tower. Matt Davison, spokesmanh for Erie Canal Harbor Development said while the Canal Side plan is being revised, the agency’s primary focus remainds on finishing the demolitioj of Memorial Auditorium and preparing for construction of a 150,000-square-foot Bass Pro stores to anchor the downtown developmentg project.
